Exhibitions > Journey to the Center of the Earth, work by Peter Brown

New York and Colorado artist Peter Brown paints richly textured, multi-layered acrylics on wood panels that oscillate between abstraction and concreteness, realism and fantasy. Inspired by the rock faces and canyons near Lyons, CO, Brown seeks to develop depth and space for the eye to play with and explore. His process mirrors the geological by building layer upon layer only to expose them, as erosion, intrusion and fracturing reveal the earth’s strata. The relation of paint and the evolving narrative brings such elements as fire, wind, and water into play as well as indistinct figures and architectural forms.

Peter Brown received a BFA from Ohio Wesleyan University and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has been exhibiting his work since the 1960’s and has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Detroit and other locations across the country. He has been written about in the New York Times, Newsday, Artforum and Arts Magazine. His work is in the collections of The Prudential, NY; News Corp; City University of New York; First National Bank of Chicago, and the Dannheiser Foundation, NY.
